Break into the Scene A Musician Guide to Making Connections Creating Opportunities and Launching a Career edition by Seth Hanes Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
I was a beta reader for the book and then went on to reread the published version.
Not only was I provided with tools to help me as a freelance musician which I could immediately use, I also got many of my questions that I didn't have an outlet to ask about my profession answered. I improved my relationships with my network, almost instantly got gigs (got a $400 gig and a possible residency within 24 hours of reading), and got out of burnout after reading.
Seth answered all of my questions while reading, and was (and still is!) really invested in those who read the book.
I highly recommend reading, regardless if you're new at this or have been doing it for years. It profoundly affected the way that I approach my job as a freelancer.
Seth is the real deal when it comes to entrepreneurship geared for musicians. He takes lessons he's learned as a freelance musician and shares them in this short and very readable book. If you're interested in jumpstarting a freelancing career or are new to an area and need a boost to getting your name out there, it's a must read!
Clear, concise, actionable advice for musicians everywhere. Taking this book's advice helped me easily land freelance work, make new contacts, and even start doing some contracting myself (and this is after I had moved to a new city and had to start from scratch building my network). If you're a musician you need this book because it's basically everything we didn't get taught in school.
This is a must-read for musicians in any stage of their career. Seth has done a tremendous job compiling actionable advice into this book. You'll learn a lot of clear techniques for establishing yourself as a musician.
This is the kind of book that I wish existed back when I was starting out in the music world. Bravo to Seth for putting this out, and definitely get your copy!
I like that this book is a quick read with lots of actionable advice packed in. Seth Hanes emphasizes the importance of simply getting started and being proactive, and his concise writing reflects that. You don't have to spend your time fumbling with all of the minute details, which often just helps us procrastinate in the long run.
That being said, when it comes to detail, this book does not aim to be exhaustive in terms of providing examples and case studies for the advice given. Most of the advice is from the author's personal experience and observations gathered from dealing with those whom he consults. Being a "numbers" gal, I tend to gravitate towards those kinds of details, which this book doesn't often provide. (He even admits he's not a "numbers" person, so that's okay!) However, the principles behind being a successful freelance musician are the emphasis, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I've been a successful freelance musician for over twenty-five years including the last six working full-time without the safety net of a day-job. Throughout my career, I've had experienced many first class performance opportunities and situations, including receiving a standing ovation after a solo performance at Carnegie Hall.
Seth's book is a straight-to-the-point, no-nonsense guide written to help young musicians who have no idea what to do once they step out of the practice room and try to find gigs in the treacherous waters of the freelance musician world.
Beyond simply telling the reader what to do, Seth provides actionable steps and reasons to empower the reader to get started.
As I long time freelancer, I found myself nodding my head in agreement with pretty much everything Seth discusses.
Most importantly, however, is the fact that after 25 years, I still do many of the things that he discusses in his book on a regular basis WITH SUCCESS. I even found a few topics that were directly related to tasks that were buried at the bottom of my to-do list.
After reading Seth's book, I decided to elevate and finally completed them!
I also loved the story about the "one 11th grader" among hundreds of high-school, collegiate and graduate students that Seth has spoken to, during his "Always Follow Up" discussion who actually responded to his request to send a simple follow up after one of his seminars.
By following Seth's guide and taking simple and specific actions, a person trying to "Break into the Scene" or even "Stay on the Scene" will have a tremendous advantage over 99.9% of his/her peers who will never go further than their initial head nod of agreement.
Don't be among the 99.9%...follow the steps that Seth recommends.
Or do nothing...and leave more opportunities for me.
This book is a fantastic resource for anyone in the music business today!
Seth has the ability to see the overall picture while also being able to offer specific and actionable advice which so many books lack. The very practical information in this book obviously comes from someone who has successfully executed the ideas himself rather than by someone who has spent their entire career teaching others how to do something they've never put into practice themselves.
I have 20 years in the music business and can say that the ideas in this book will absolutely translate into more and better work for any musician. Thanks to Seth for providing the music world with such a wonderful resource!
